Strive for Excellence
We will Reap Whatever we Sow
Author: David Oletu (DCM)
As Christians who represent Christ, we cannot afford to fail in life.
Failure should not be attributed to the Christian lifestyle. Excellence should be our goal.
We must strive to become excellent in our academics, careers, ministry, marriage, and character to model well for Christ.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 KJV
[10] Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
In the words of Bishop David Oyedepo, there is no room for mediocrity.
Strive for Excellence
In this article, we will examine four reasons Christians should strive for excellence in their life pursuits:
- Strive to excel for yourself: Excellence is the core mark for gaining good validation and self-independence. Whatever good thing we find ourselves doing, we must do it well.
When someone needs the service of a skill you possess, you should be the first person who comes to mind.
Strive to excel in all salient aspects of your lives to make a good name for yourself in the minds of people. The perception people have of you matters a lot.
I often hear some people say that they don’t need anyone’s validation to get to whatever height they want to attain in life.
But the truth is, at some point in our lives, we will need people’s validation.
We will need them to talk about our good works, either for others to see or for us to be encouraged to grow better.
What people say about you matters!
Excellence made David recognised by King Saul for his ability to play the harp excellently.
Note that when King Saul needed a musician, it was someone who told him about David,
and that was how David started playing for the king.
So, we will need people to validate us by talking about our good works.
And the only way we can receive good validation from relevant places and people is to be excellent at what we do!
Excellence opens more doors of opportunity for you.
Imagine a world full of billions of people who studied the same course you are studying or are aiming for the same career path as you.
What do you think will make you stand out among those multitudes if not excellence?
Strive for Excellence
- Strive to excel for your children: The family is considered the basic unit of society, meaning that it is the foundation of every child.
Christian parents should strive to be their children’s number one role model in every key aspect of life: marital, academic, career, ministry, etc.
When you are the kind of parent your children look up to to meet their basic needs,
and get answers to their mind-boggling questions for guidance, your children will not be on the wrong path.
The Bible says in Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
A good way to train them is to live exemplary, and a good way to live exemplary is to model excellence in our work, thoughts, and actions.
Have you ever wondered:
When a child is asked who his or her role model is, why do they have to mention the names of some popular achievers whom they have never seen before?
Why can’t they mention the names of their parents?
We should all strive to excel to be our children’s biggest role models,
be worth emulating, and leave an inheritance for them, like the proverbial good man (Proverbs 13:22).
Strive for Excellence
- Strive to excel for the people: The people involve your family, friends, colleagues, and society generally.
When you excel in a particular area of your life, you do not just give yourself a good image; you make your people proud of you.
Through your excellent work, others may also want to strive to emulate you.
Excellence will make you authentic and a reference point for people to follow.
How beautiful will it be if many Christians are seen as role models and sources of pride in society?
If you are excellent, many people will want to learn from you, and that could be an avenue for you to win souls for Christ.
If you have an excellent marriage, ministry, career, and good character, who wouldn’t want to listen to you to learn?
A blind man cannot possibly lead a multitude of blind men on a road filled with vehicles at top speeds.
Therefore, failure should never be an option for us.
Although humans may truly fail in some cases,
we must know that if we fail in a particular area, we need to redeem that lost chance and stay authentic for people to find us worth emulating.
Strive for Excellence
- It is the will of God. You may say that no one is perfect and that anyone can fail.
While making such an utterance, remember Matthew 5:48, where Jesus says, “We must be perfect as our heavenly father is perfect.”
So, it is possible that even in our imperfections, we can be made perfect if we stay true and diligent in our pursuit.
Excellence should be our watchword because our God is excellent.
In Career, Ecclesiastes 9:10 says,
“Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.”
Also, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven.”
The reward?
“Have you seen someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.” ~Proverb 22:29
To excel in ministry, “study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15
If it is not God’s will that we excel, it won’t be stated or shown in the word. God instructed it, and he exemplified it, so we should emulate it.
Overall, remember, “God cannot be mocked; we will reap whatever we sow” (Galatians 6:7).
