The Enugu state police has repelled gunmen’s attack on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC office in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement released by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye on Monday, he stated that the attack occurred Sunday night and was repelled by the police and military.
Okoye stated that the attackers destroyed the security gatehouse and left a policeman dead and another injured. According to him, the attackers failed to gain access into the main building.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, confirmed the incident.
“A meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security in Enugu State co-chaired by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC and the Commissioner of Police has been convened to discuss the latest incident towards designing additional strategies of fortifying the offices and protecting the personnel and materials’’ he stated.
The commission assured Nigerians that elections would still take place in Enugu despite the incident.
According to data released by INEC on December 16, 2022, 50 attacks have so far been recorded on its facilities across 15 states in the last four years, with Imo State topping the list of states affected, with 11 incidents.
