Passing the Light
From Generation to Generation! –
“By investing in Young Ministers, the Church can Raise a Generation of Leaders who will Drive the Church Forward with Passion, Creativity, and Dedication.”
Empowering the Next Generation of Church Leaders to Illuminate God’s Will on Earth.
Author: David Oletu (DCM)
“This fear-based approach to faith can lead to a superficial display of holiness rather than a genuine understanding of God’s love.
The church must recognize the complexity of young people’s lives and be sensitive to their struggles.
As we move forward,
let us reflect on our readiness to assume full responsibility for this sacred ministry, entrusted to us by God.”
Passing the Light
In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, the church finds itself at a critical juncture.
The younger generation, once the backbone of religious institutions, is increasingly disengaging from traditional faith communities.
As culture, technology, and intellect continue to reshape the world, the church must confront a profound question:
“What does the future hold?”
The signs are unmistakable.
Churches are being converted into shops and restaurants, a stark testament to the declining interest in religious worship.
The rise of intellectualism and digitalization has led to a shift away from faith and towards self-reliance.
Young people, once nurtured in the bosom of the church,
are now finding solace in their own thoughts and emotions, often neglecting the guidance of the body of Christ.
This seismic shift poses a significant challenge to the church’s mission and survival.
As the older generation passes the baton to the younger, it becomes clear that the church must adapt to remain relevant.
The question is, how?
Can the church find a way to speak to the hearts of a new generation, or will it become a relic of the past?
The fate of the church in the future generation hangs in the balance.
We must reason together, seeking innovative solutions to this crisis.
By embracing change, fostering inclusivity, and empowering young leaders, the church can rediscover its purpose and passion.
The time for transformation is now.
Will the church rise to the challenge, or will it succumb to the pressures of a changing world?
The choice is ours.
Passing the Light
This article examines the factors contributing to young people’s disengagement from God and the church,
and advocates for the intentional inclusion of young ministers or empathetic older ministers who understand and relate to the younger generation;
to serve as role models and mentors, thereby rekindling their interest and engagement with their faith.
2 Kings 3:11-12 KJV
[11] But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said,Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
[12] And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

Why Young People Are Losing Interest in God.
Social Media: A Leading Cause of Disengagement
In today’s digital age, social media has become a pervasive influence on young people’s lives.
Unlike previous generations, who relied on parents, pastors, and close mentors for guidance,
many young individuals now turn to social media for mentorship, validation, and a sense of belonging.
While social media offers many benefits, such as connectivity and access to information, it also poses significant risks.
If left unchecked, young people may fall under the influence of toxic intellectual mentors who espouse philosophies that contradict God’s teachings.
These online influencers often present themselves as authorities on various aspects of life,
offering attractive and seemingly convincing ideas that resonate with young people.
However, their ideologies often deviate from biblical principles, leading young minds astray.
As they engage with these mentors’ anti-Christian ideologies, they may start to find fragments of truth in them,
ultimately drifting away from the values and principles instilled by their parents, pastors, and the Bible.
This can cause them to lose interest in God, question their faith, and stray from the right path.
The constant stream of information on social media can also create a sense of spiritual fatigue,
leading young people to feel disconnected from their spiritual roots.
Passing the Light
Furthermore, the curated online personas of influencers can create unrealistic expectations and promote a culture of comparison,
further eroding young people’s sense of identity and purpose.
Fear: A Barrier to Genuine Faith
Fear, rather than love, often drives young people’s engagement and disengagement with the church.
Instead of experiencing an atmosphere of peace, love, and joy, many young individuals attend church out of fear—
fear of hell, fear of enemies, fear of losing material possessions.
This fear-based approach to faith can lead to a superficial display of holiness rather than a genuine understanding of God’s love.
Young people may feel pressured to present themselves as holy, not out of a deep understanding of God’s love,
but out of fear of judgment or consequences.
They may fight wars against perceived ‘human enemies,’ rather than praying for them in peace, as instructed in the scriptures.
Even their offerings are given with a fearful heart, rather than a cheerful one.
This fear-based approach to faith can be suffocating, leading many young people to seek freedom and self-expression in the world instead.
They yearn for a peaceful and authentic way to live out their faith, unencumbered by fear and judgment.
To break free from these fears, the church must create a safe space for young people to explore their faith, ask questions, and experience the love and grace of God.
By doing so, we can help them develop a genuine, love-based relationship with God, rather than one driven by fear.
Ignoring Young People’s Concerns: A Recipe for Disengagement
The church has a critical role in addressing the needs of its young flock but often falls short.
Many young people face immense challenges due to their socio-economic background or country’s economic struggles.
When their needs go unmet, they may resort to dangerous and immoral acts to survive.
As they become entrenched in these behaviours, they gradually disengage from the church that failed to support them.
The church’s neglect of young people’s concerns extends beyond financial struggles to mental health, relationships, career guidance, and more.
By not creating space to address these issues, the church pushes young people to seek answers elsewhere, often outside the body of Christ.
This can lead to a crisis of faith and a sense of abandonment.
The church must recognize the complexity of young people’s lives and be sensitive to their struggles.
Passing the Light
A hungry person cannot focus on getting fed with Spiritual Food when they haven’t fed themselves for days with physically nourished foods.
Similarly, a young person struggling with mental health issues or relationship problems needs more than just spiritual platitudes.
The church must offer practical support, guidance, and resources to help young people navigate life’s challenges.
Perceived Hypocrisy Among Church Leaders: A Concern for Young Minds
The scriptures forewarn us of the rise of false teachers and prophets.
However, in today’s digital age, where people are quick to share the church’s shortcomings and stir up controversy,
the impact of perceived hypocrisy among church leaders on young minds is a pressing concern.
The constant exposure to hypocritical behaviour can lead to a distorted view of the church and its teachings.
Young people, with their inquisitive and analytical minds, may overthink and irrationally conclude that the church is flawed, leading to a crisis of faith.
This can be detrimental to their spiritual growth and relationship with God.
The church must acknowledge this challenge and address it proactively.

The Urgent Need for Young and Youth Ministers as Role Models
The church is facing a critical juncture in its history.
As the world struggles with unprecedented challenges, the need for effective leadership and role models has never been more pressing.
One crucial aspect of addressing this need is identifying, nurturing, and empowering young ministers to serve as beacons of hope and inspiration for their peers.
When young people see more individuals from their own generation,
or those older ones who understand their experiences leading in ministry, and doing well in other salient aspects of their lives;
young people are more likely to be inspired to serve God with dedication and passion.
Notably, Young or Youth ministers can relate to the unique struggles and aspirations of young people,
making them more effective in communicating the gospel and guiding them in their spiritual journeys.
Passing the Light
However, many talented young ministers feel compelled to abandon their calling due to a lack of opportunities or support.
Some, like young church music ministers, turn to secular music in pursuit of global recognition and a broader audience.
This not only represents a loss of talent but also a missed opportunity for the church to raise a generation of passionate and resilient young Christians.
To address this, the church must prioritize providing the necessary resources, platforms, and guidance for young ministers to thrive.
This includes:
– Mentorship programs that pair young ministers with experienced leaders
– Training and development opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge
– Platforms for young ministers to share their talents and gifts with the wider church community
– Support systems to help them navigate the challenges of ministry and maintain their spiritual well-being
By investing in young ministers, the church can raise a generation of leaders who will drive the church forward with passion, creativity, and dedication.
These individuals will be equipped to address the complex challenges facing the world today,
from social justice to mental health and will inspire their peers to do the same.
The need for young and youth ministers as role models has never been more urgent.
Passing the Light
Consequently, The church must recognize the potential of its young leaders and provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive.
With this, we can raise a generation of resilient and passionate young Christians who will fulfil God’s purpose on earth, even in the face of adversity.

Message well-passed! 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
A very important message at this time.
The earlier the church recognises all these points stated, the better for the future of the church.
Thank you for sharing.
Beautifully written 👏👏👏
I will add that: A deep and sincere friendship should be encouraged amongst young people.
Together with youth fellowships and other youth interactions in the church, young people should look out for the wellbeing of their peers and collaborate by helping each other to keep the faith alive.
