How could God let a lot decide?
From: A Miracle Every Day
We cannot understand God’s mind because we are human, and He is divine.”
It kind of annoyed me when I read that the day the angel appeared to him in the temple, Zechariah only ended up there because “the lot” had decided it.
We read:
“One day Zechariah was serving God in the Temple, for his order was on duty that week.
As was the custom of the priests, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense.
While the incense was being burned…an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the incense altar.” (from Luke 1:8-11 NLT)
This angel told him that his prayer had been answered and that he would now become a father.
I keep wondering what would have happened if the lot had fallen on someone else?
How could God let a lot decide?
Would Zechariah never have become a father?
Or would the other priest chosen then have become a father? How could God let a lot decide?
Sometimes I really have to laugh at myself.
Because on the one hand I say that I trust God so much and on the other hand such stories bother me, haha.
Does this happen to you sometimes?
That you read something in the Bible and you think, “Really?”
How could God let a lot decide?
Then it’s time for us to consider together that God is the ultimate authority, even when He uses “the lot.”
Let’s look at the following Bible passage together:
God says,
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT)
Another little reminder to us: “We cannot understand God’s mind because we are human, and He is divine.”
He alone is God.
We are human.
God loves us.
While we humans perish, God endures forever.
That truth alone is reason enough to trust Him, even if we don’t understand.
Even though you may be questioning some things, God will remain faithful.
“Jesus told him, ‘Don’t be afraid; just believe.” (Mark 5:36 NIV)
