Olubankole Wellington (Banky W) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has finally spoken up after a shocking and unexpected loss at the polls where he lost the Eti -Osa Federal Constituency election to Labour Party (LP) candidate Thaddeus Attah.
In his recent sermon titled, “Faith After A Fall” Wellington who since the defeat at the polls, had not made any public statement or appearance in this vulnerable sermon, bared his heart to his church family, sharing with them how he felt about his now shattered plans.
He said “This was supposed to be our thanksgiving service, you know after the election is over, and we come together to celebrate and thank God. I was just going to give a short charge to say, “see with the Lord has done. Then we use that to build up your faith and give God some much due necessary praise.”
Banky W revealed having already planned to go to Abuja immediately after the service to find an apartment and office space for himself.
Speaking at the Waterbrook Church and drawing from his recent loss at the February 25th election, he asked the congregation “Is it only faith when you win? Your faith in God does not stop you from hurting but it helps you heal and it helps you deal. Your faith in God is not just about when everything is rosy and a walk in the park.”
“Furthermore, the message of Christianity is not that you accept God into your life and he helps you to avoid troubles and stress and dysfunction.
No, you don’t have to avoid it, but your faith in God helps transform it, helps you process it and it helps you overcome it.
“You know we sing songs like ‘we bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the lord. As a sacrifice it should cost you something, sometimes praise is born out of pain, confusion, frustration, and doing everything you should do.
“The Bible says when you’ve done all to stand, stand. Even though it’s hard to see him, hard to hear him and hard to understand that he’s there but you have to trust him; the fact that he resurrected, I will resurrect too. If you think my story is over then you don’t know my God and you don’t know me and so this service is supposed to be a thanksgiving service but ladies and gentlemen I’ve got news for you. It’s still a thanksgiving service”, he said.
This would be Wellingtons second loss in contesting for the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat. He lost the first election to Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in February 2019 and the second to Attah of LP in February 2023.
