and spiritual leaders without conscience.
According to Myles Munroe, the oversight is tragic.

I am indebted to books.
Books changed my life!
While growing up as a child, I struggled to read and write.
And I could barely pronounce a word, think smartly, or spell even the simplest word.
My struggle accompanied me down to the primary 6th grade,
always making my name sit in the bottom position of the class on the yearly academic results sheets.
One day, while in Primary 6, I came across a very small storybook that had some cartoon illustrations in it—that was what drew my attention.
However, suddenly, I found myself reading every dialogue in it slowly in my mind.
I enjoyed the story, so I couldn’t get over reading it repeatedly.
That was when my love for literature grew.
The confidence to begin reading out loud grew so big in me from then on.
Alas! From one who found it difficult to pronounce a simple word in primary 6,
I became one whom the teachers started seeing as a newsreader for my sudden ability to read so fluently to the hearings of the audience.
If I came across the author who wrote that storybook today, I would probably give him or her a million dollars for changing my life with his or her written literature piece.
Unfortunately, I didn’t bother to know the name of the author; I was only drawn by the content and graphical illustration of the book.
However, the point remains that a book changed my life!
We should never underestimate the positive changes a good reading culture can make in our lives.

In the spirit of sparking a burning desire to read in us on this day,
I will be briefly reviewing and recommending 10 edifying books for you to consider adding to your reading list in August.

- Living Courageously by Joyce Meyer:
This book will help you come out of your fears and insecurity.
Joyce Meyer boldly claims that we can face anything, even if it means doing it afraid!
Joyce Meyer acknowledges that fear is one of the biggest problems we must all face if we truly want to live life to the fullest.
However, one of the many benefits available to Christians is freedom from fear.
Joyce Meyer’s ‘Living Courageously’ is divided into two parts.
In part one, Joyce Meyer gives us an understanding of what fear is, where it comes from, what our attitude towards fear should be, and how we can overcome fear.
In part two, she goes on to discuss some of the more prominent fears that people experience.
Although you may deal with a kind of fear that she doesn’t cover in this book,
the tools you need to defeat it are the same as with any fear you are currently facing.

- The Power of Character in Leadership by Dr. Myles Munroe:
This book was written out of Dr. Myles Munroe’s keen observation:
of how many leadership training seminars and academic programs focus on vision, skills, management, organisation, teamwork, and many other helpful subjects.
Yet, few of those courses address the topic of a leader’s character.
Myles Munroe thinks the subject of ‘Character in Leadership’ is either downplayed or never covered at all.
We have only defined leadership based on titles, position, power, intelligence, skills, gifts, talents, educational qualifications, knowledge, competence, charisma, etc.,
and in the end, having neglected ‘character’, we end up producing:
charismatic leaders without character,
gifted leaders without conviction,
powerful leaders without principles,
intellectual leaders without morality,
visionary leaders without values,
and spiritual leaders without conscience.
According to Myles Munroe, the oversight is tragic.
“Not only has it permitted the encroachment of an unhealthy atmosphere of negative attitudes and practices among leaders,
but it has also led to destructive consequences for individuals, societies, and nations.”
This book, therefore, exposes us to the crucial role character plays in every position we occupy and provides us with practical ways we can develop a good character.

- The Purpose and Power of Love and Marriage by Dr. Myles Munroe:
Today, many people are beginning to question the institution of marriage and whether it is still valid for social development.
The reasons those questions emanate are the high rates of divorce and abuse in marriage in society today.
Such terrible experiences that happen in marriage make people see it as a needless and toxic journey; hence, avoid it.
Sadly, highly esteemed and celebrated individuals in sports, entertainment, politics, and even in the church fall victim to the demise of relationships,
and further erode the respect, confidence, and high position the marriage structure once held in the social structure of our communities.
Out of curiosity, Myles Munroe asks, If we do away with the traditional institution of marriage, what will we replace it with?
What more efficient arrangement could we find to secure the level of commitment, loyalty, respect, support, sense of community,
and love necessary to meet the basic needs of the human spirit?
In this book, Myles Munroe maintains his stance:
that despite many failed marriages, broken homes, divorce cases, and disillusioned products of failed relationships, marriage is still a good idea—
in fact, it is the best idea!
He goes on to offer a good approach that can help us understand ‘love’ better for a healthy marriage.

- How Successful People Lead by John C. Maxwell:
If you have a vision of building an organisation or bringing a team together to achieve a common goal, then this book is for you.
John Maxwell has dedicated more than thirty years of his life to helping others learn what he knows about leading.
He reveals that he spends eight days every year teaching leadership on several continents,
yet the subject of ‘Leadership’ remains inexhaustible because everything rises and falls on leadership.
According to John Maxwell, if you want to make a positive impact on the world, learning to lead better will help you do it.
In this book, John Maxwell examines leadership as a series of levels that can be gained through targeted actions with many benefits.
This book, thus, gives us a clear picture and definition of leadership, breaks down ‘Leading’ into understandable steps,
provides a clear game plan for leadership development, and aligns leadership practices, principles, and values.

- The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth by John C. Maxwell:
So many people are filled with good potential but lack the ability or drive to fulfil it.
This is where John Maxwell’s ‘The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth’ comes in timely.
We all desire to reach our full potential, but how do we get there?
This book will help us grow and develop ourselves so we can have the best chances of becoming the person we were created to be.
Maxwell recommends that we tackle a chapter of this book every week, discuss it with some friends,
do the application exercises that are at the end of each chapter, keep a growth journal, and incorporate what we learn from this book into our everyday lives.
He goes on to assure us that by learning the laws and then living them, we will be on our way to reaching our potential.
And if we keep learning and growing every day for many years, we will be astounded by how far it will take us.

- Healing, Health, and Wholeness by Faith Oyedepo:
Faith Oyedepo dedicates this book to everyone who desires to experience healing, health, and wholeness in life.
Faith Oyedepo recalls how, in 2004, the devil violently attacked her body, making her pass through the valley of the shadow of death.
According to her, such experience led her to a desperate search that produced the content of this book.
Faith Oyedepo claims that God’s greatest wish for mankind is that man prospers and stays in health even as his soul prospers—
Jesus came to earth not only to save our souls but also to make us sound physically and mentally.
With the above claim, backed by good scripture verses and stories, Faith Oyedepo gives us the assurance that when we contact the light in this book,
the darkness of physical problems in our lives will be shattered and destroyed permanently.

- Overcoming Fear and Anxiety Through Spiritual Warfare by Carol Peters-Tanksley:
Today, many Christians are faced with fears and anxiety about the evils that exist in our world.
Carol Peters acknowledges that if we have decided to follow Jesus, then we have an enemy.
He also clarifies that our enemy is God’s enemy—Satan and his kingdom of darkness—
and not our fellow humans, who know just how to push our buttons.
This book will, however, help us grow our faith in the absolute certainty of victory—both now and in the end—over the kingdom of darkness.
It will help us understand what Christ’s victory on the cross means for us when it comes to fear and anxiety,
and how that can set us free from bondage.
It will help us come to know the confidence and victory that Jesus wants for us, regardless of what outside circumstances are affecting our lives.
In addition, it will increase our absolute certainty in the outcome of this war,
when fear and anxiety and everything else that is evil will be forever destroyed and Jesus wins!

- How to Overcome Fear of Death by Sunday Adelaja:
I find this book fascinating because it applies to almost every one of us.
Many people have become so attached to the things of this world that they fear dying one day.
If there is a drug that would enable people to live forever, I am certain that a large number of us would purchase it for consumption.
And we will only purchase it out of fear because humans will naturally fear the unknown.
Sunday Adelaja believes that victory over the fear of death will help us live a good and peaceful life on earth,
have a good relationship with God and develop a good attitude towards others.
Hence, he exposes us to what happens to a person immediately after death to help us overcome the fear of death, which is hidden in the unknown.
