Nigeria Celebrates Democracy Day!
“In times like these, what can a person like me do”?
On June 6, 2018, then-President Muhammadu Buhari announced June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day,
replacing May 29, a day set aside to celebrate the return of democracy after decades of disruptive military interference.
As Nigeria celebrates democracy day, Moral questions arise from failures in Leadership, Corruption, and Security issues.
“You cannot eat democracy” is a phrase often attributed to autocrats – however, this occasion is a call to duty especially for Christians and Political leaders.
Throughout history, Christians have played significant roles in governance:
- Constantine the Great (4th century): Constantine, the Roman Emperor, legalized Christianity in the empire in 313 AD. He favored Christianity and appointed Christians to government positions
- Medieval Papacy (Middle Ages): The Pope effectively served as the political leader of Europe during the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Byzantine Empire also centered around the church in the East.
- Influence on Moral Issues (19th-20th century): Christians engaged in debates on slavery, abortion rights, sexual revolution, and gay rights.
Above examples highlight the complex relationship between Christianity and politics throughout history, but Christian involvement in governance extends beyond Europe.

In Nigeria, Christian Participation in Politics and Democratic Governance is relatively poor!
Christians have a role to play in politics and governance!
But Christian participation in Nigeria has not been significant due to misconceptions about biblical injunctions.
However, Christians have three key obligations: Duty to God, Duty to the State, and Duty to Neighbours.
Worthy of note is that during the #ENDSARS protests in Nigeria, Christians joined citizens in advocating for police reform and social justice.
Their involvement highlighted the need for good governance and accountability
Christians worldwide engage in politics and governance, advocating for justice, transparency, and social welfare.
The involvement of Christians transcends geographical boundaries and reflects their commitment to ethical leadership and societal well-being.

The Role of Christians in Achieving Good Governance
Good governance is essential for the well-being of any society.
It ensures fairness, transparency, and accountability in decision-making processes.
While governments play a central role in governance, religious communities, including Christians, can significantly contribute to promoting good governance.
Here are some key roles that Christians should play:
-
Ethical Leadership and Values:
Christians should exemplify honesty, integrity, and selflessness in their personal and public lives. These values align with the principles of good governance.
By living out these virtues, Christian leaders can inspire others and set a positive example for society.
-
Advocacy for Justice and Equality:
The Bible emphasizes justice and compassion for the marginalized.
Christians can advocate for policies that promote equality, protect human rights, and address social injustices.
Engaging in dialogue with policymakers and advocating for fair laws ensures that governance serves all citizens, especially the vulnerable.
-
Promoting Transparency and Accountability:
Christians can encourage transparency by demanding openness in government processes. Holding leaders accountable for their actions ensures that they serve the public interest.
Participating in civic education and monitoring government activities helps maintain transparency.
-
Social Responsibility and Compassion:
Christian teachings emphasize caring for the less fortunate. Christians can actively engage in charitable work, supporting those in need.
By addressing poverty, hunger, and healthcare disparities, Christians contribute to a more just and compassionate society.
-
Prayer and Spiritual Guidance:
Christians can pray for wisdom and discernment for leaders. Spiritual guidance can influence decision-making and promote ethical governance.
Pastors and religious leaders can provide moral counsel to politicians, encouraging them to prioritize the common good.
-
Refusing Cooperation with Corruption:
Christians must avoid any indirect cooperation with corrupt practices. This includes refusing to support corrupt regimes or unethical practices.
Upholding integrity and refusing to compromise on ethical standards contributes to good governance.
-
Engaging in Dialogue and Advocacy:
Christian organizations can participate in policy discussions, advocating for laws that align with biblical principles.
By engaging with lawmakers, Christians can influence legislation and promote policies that benefit society as a whole.
Christians have a vital role to play in achieving good governance.
Commitment to ethical leadership, advocacy for justice, and active participation in civic life can contribute to a more just, transparent, and accountable society.
Let us continue to work together for the betterment of our communities and the world.

In times like these, what can a person like me do?
Above quote is attributed to the duos, Ralph Waldo Emerson and G.K. Chesterton.
It’s a thought-provoking reflection on individual agency during challenging circumstances.
2 Corinthians 1:8-9 KJV
[8] For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
[9] but we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
During challenging economic times, Christians can draw guidance from biblical principles to navigate the situation.
-
Trust in God’s Security:
“We were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death.” (2 Corinthians 1:8-9).
Rely on God’s provision and recognize that our ultimate security lies in Him, not in material wealth1.
-
Stewardship Mindset:
“We are stewards, not owners.” View resources as entrusted to us by God. Be responsible stewards, managing finances wisely and generously.
-
Faith Growth in Tough Times:
“Faith grows in tough times.” Use economic challenges as opportunities to deepen your faith and reliance on God. Trust that He is working even in adversity.
-
Generosity and Meeting Needs:
“We must generously and lovingly meet the needs of others.” Extend compassion to those struggling. Share resources, support local charities, and care for the vulnerable1.
-
Learning to Live with Less:
Adapt to economic constraints by simplifying your lifestyle. Prioritize essentials and find contentment in God’s sufficiency.
Christian responses during economic crises should Reflect Love, Compassion, and Trust in God’s providence.
Helen Keller, renowned for her resilience and wisdom, shared many inspirational quotes.
One of her notable quotes emphasizes collective effort: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”.
Another powerful statement by Keller highlights individual responsibility: “I am only one; but still, I am one. I cannot do everything, but still, I can do something. I will not refuse to do something I can do”
Certainly! Here are some practical steps Christians can take to help others during these times:
-
Acts of Kindness:
Offer practical assistance to Neighbours, friends, or community members. Simple acts like grocery shopping for an elderly Neighbour or providing a meal can make a difference.
-
Support Local Charities:
Contribute to local food banks, shelters, and nonprofits. These organizations often serve vulnerable populations and rely on donations.
-
Financial Assistance:
If possible, donate money to reputable charities or directly help individuals facing financial hardship.
Consider setting up a fund within your church community to assist struggling members.
-
Volunteer Time and Skills:
Volunteer at soup kitchens, homeless shelters, or community centers. Use your skills (such as tutoring, counselling, or handyman work) to benefit others.
-
Prayer and Emotional Support:
Pray for those in need and offer emotional support. Sometimes a listening ear can be incredibly valuable.
-
Advocate for Policy Changes:
Engage in advocacy efforts to address systemic issues. Write letters to policymakers or participate in peaceful demonstrations.
-
Promote Awareness:
Share information about local resources and assistance programs with others. Raise awareness about specific needs (e.g., affordable housing, mental health services) in your community.
Remember, even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact during tough times.
Here is wishing Nigerians, Happy Democracy Day, Peaceful and Prosperous years ahead!
