The Fact & The Truth: Common Lies About Purpose and Calling.
Have you ever considered how many cultural assumptions we take for granted about our calling and purpose?
The world is obsessed with self-help slogans and success stories.
If we don’t play Biblical defense, we’re prone to absorb all kinds of strange ideas that sound good on the surface but ultimately lead us astray…
So today I thought I’d explore a few of these common ideas and offer a scriptural reality check.
After all, no one would know more about the deception of what the world has to offer than Solomon.
Let’s unpack these three common lies about purpose and calling:
Lie #1: “Do what makes you happy.”
The world says: “Follow what makes you happy and the universe will open doors where there were only walls.”
It’s a captivating idea, suggesting that if you pursue what makes you happiest, success will follow…
Here’s what Solomon said:
“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 1:14).
Solomon tells us that happiness as an end goal is like chasing the wind—elusive and ultimately unsatisfying.
TRUTH: True purpose has roots deeper than fleeting feelings of bliss; it’s found in commitments that endure, relationships that last, and a life aligned with God’s will.
Lie #2 “You create your own reality.”
Scripture teaches that God is the creator of all things and that reality is founded upon His creative work.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth…” (Genesis 1:1).
God is the sovereign creator of reality–not humans.
Trust in God is the key. Not our ability to manifest reality.
Proverbs 16:9 states, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
While we can plan and strive, it is ultimately God’s will that determines how things will unfold.
While I believe that the choices that we make affect our reality, the New Age notion “You create your own reality” promotes a human-centered approach to life.
TRUTH: Our lives are ultimately governed by God’s creative will, purposeful design, and providential care, rather than by our own desires.
Lie #3 “The universe conspires to support your vision.”
Similar to the 2nd lie, this one is self-focused.
The universe is God’s creation, governed by His providence and sovereign will.
Psalm 103:19 tells us, “The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all.”
So, God, not the universe, has ultimate control and authority over everything that happens.
Furthermore, God has a specific plan for the world and for individuals, which He unfolds according to His perfect wisdom and timing.
Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.”
And Jesus Himself taught His followers to seek God’s kingdom first, rather than trying to bend the will of the universe to their own desires.
In Matthew 6:33, He says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
TRUTH: It’s not about OUR vision, but about getting in line with HIS vision.
