President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to take a definite decision within seven days to resolve the problem of the scarcity of new naira notes in the country.
Buhari said this at a meeting with members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum who had told him that the current crash crunch could dent his good records in office. Buhari maintained that the currency re-design would give a boost to the economy and provide long-term benefits but expressed worry over the lack of commitment of banks to the success of the policy
“Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves”, Buhari said. Adding, he said, Even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away.”
The president said he had seen television reports about cash shortages and hardship to local businesses and ordinary people. He said,“I will revert to the CBN and the minting company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension”.
