What You Need to Know About Spiritual Warfare
I am in a war.
I wrote these five words in large letters across the bottom of my dry-erase calendar many years ago after a strong revelation;
that the unseen realm is raging with spiritual enemies that intend to kill, steal, and destroy my life.
Paul warns us in 2 Corinthians 2:11 not to be ignorant of the devil’s strategies.
We need to know our enemy, know our God, and know who we are in Him—
but we also need to equip ourselves with revelation on how to defeat the enemy of our souls.
If you ignore the devil, the warfare doesn’t stop. If you focus solely on Jesus, it does not make you immune from warfare.
Yes, we should absolutely be more God-focused than demon-focused.
However, if Paul the apostle wrestled principalities and powers, who are we to think ignoring this reality will stop demonic attacks?
Havoc on the earth—sickness, disease, murders, immorality, and the like—is not God’s will.
Jesus spoiled the principalities and powers.
But the word spoiled doesn’t mean “neutered and made powerless.” Jesus plundered the kingdom of darkness.
The kingdom of darkness and all the principalities and powers that call it home lost authority over the born-again believer.
But we still have to enforce the kingdom rule of law on earth.

John 10:7-10 KJV
[7] Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
[8] All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
[9] I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
[10] The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Speak the Name of Jesus
When we meet with spiritual warfare, we may be tempted to wrestle the enemy in the flesh.
But since we wrestle not against flesh and blood, we won’t find victory in battle by taking on enemies with our intellect, reasoning, or sheer willpower.
Paul told us the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but they are mighty in God (2 Cor. 10:4).
The mighty weapons with which God has furnished us work with one condition.
We must wield this spiritual artillery under the lordship of Jesus Christ and with the authority He has given us in His name.
Our baseline in any battle is understanding the power in the name of Jesus, praying in the name of Jesus, and otherwise taking authority over our enemies in the name of Jesus.
In our own authority we have no ability to stand against the devil.
We cannot go toe-to-toe with the devil in our flesh,
nor can we effectively use Jesus’s name in demonic confrontations without a revelation of the power it carries.
Just like there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12),
there is no other name under heaven by which we can take authority over demon powers.
Meditate on the power in the name of Jesus.
Get a revelation of the power in that name before you enter into battle to exercise your authority in Christ and you will see victory.

Philippians 2:9-11 KJV
[9] Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
[10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
[11] and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Stay Filled with the Spirit
It’s not enough to be baptized in the Holy Spirit one time. You have to stay filled with the Spirit.
As Christians, it seems, we spring leaks.
When we read the Book of Acts, we see clearly that the apostles weren’t just filled with the Spirit once and for all on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4).
We also read two more accounts of the disciples being filled with the Spirit in Acts 4:31 and Acts 13:52.
If the apostles—who were witnesses of Christ’s ministry on earth, death, and resurrection—had to be filled with the Spirit over and over again, how much more so do we?
I constantly ask the Lord,
“Fill me with Your Spirit.” I know I need a fresh infilling. And I know a little dab won’t do me. I need “huge draughts of Him.”
When the enemy works to bring death and destruction in our lives, we have to remind ourselves that the Spirit who raised Christ from the dead dwells on the inside of us.
Then we need to ask Him to fill us again with that life-giving river.
When the enemy comes to frustrate God’s purposes in our lives, we need to remember the Spirit of grace is resident in us and ask Him for more, more, and more.

Ephesians 5:15-19 KJV
[15] See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
[16] redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
[17] Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
[18] And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
[19] speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
